Varicocele is characterized by dilatation of the veins in the scrotum due to malfunctioning valves in the veins. Approximately 15% of males have a scrotal varicocele.1 Most men are usually asymptomatic and do not require treatment. However, others can present with scrotal pain, swelling, infertility, or decrease in testicular size. In fact, scrotal varicoceles are the leading cause of correctable male infertility, affecting 40% of men with primary infertility.2

Treatment
Treatment options include open or laparoscopic surgical ligation or varicocele embolization. Both choices have similar success rates, but varicocele embolization is the least invasive option with lower complication rates.3 You also do not need general anesthesia with varicocele embolization because it only requires one small needle stick and can be performed with just a local anesthetic.
During varicocele embolization, a small IV catheter is placed either in the neck or groin vein. X-rays will then be used to guide the catheter into the correct vein draining into the scrotum. Once inside the faulty vein, small metallic coils and a special liquid agent are injected into the vein to close it off. Afterward, the IV catheter is removed with a small bandage applied to the vein entry site. This minimally invasive procedure is performed at our outpatient facility with same day patient discharge.
